Who is Sultan Suleyman?
The only son of Selim I, Suleyman I was born on November 6th, 1494 in Trabzon City on the Black Sea coast. At the age of 26, he became the 10th sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1520. He is known as “Kanuni” (the Lawgiver) in his homeland. But for Europeans, he has always been “Suleyman the Magnificent”.

Süleymaniye Mosque is the second-largest imperial mosque complex in the city. It was built during the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The 4 minarets symbolized that Suleyman was the 4th sultan following the conquest of Constantinople. The 10 balconies of the minarets symbolized that he was the 10th sultan who ruled since the foundation of the state in 1299.

Mosque complex includes a hospital, primary school, Hamam (Turkish bath), a caravanserai (lodge for traveling tradesmen), four medrese (Coran school), medical college, public kitchen to serve food for the poor. It also includes mausoleums of the sultan Suleyman, his wife Roxelane (Hürrem Sultan), and the rest of his family.
